November 10 IT as a Career Choice
November 06 Windows Server Division WebLog : Faster Eval Setup of SQL, Exchange and Windows ServerSome things are just too cool. I have been thinking for some time that for eval purposes, it would be nice to have a pre-configured Virtual Hard Drive (vhd) that you could download and run in VPC or Virtual Server or something like that and kick the tires without having to learn how to install/config/etc the how thing. Well, apparently the chip in my brain that MS put there has a direct feed to the folks at Redmond. Have a peek at the link. Link to Windows Server Division WebLog : Faster Eval Setup of SQL, Exchange and Windows Server October 27 Password miserySo as I poke around the different newsgroups. someone has posted a TechNet article that has me giggling even now. I have a password that is JUST a touch long (personally I like short passwords as it is easier for my poor brain, but pass-phrases are indeed more secure), but this is silly! After all, anything more than 10,000 characters is just WAY too hard to remember ;) October 23 Exclusive: Microsoft Overcomes Final Vista Hurdles, Heads to RTMwhile the clock is still ticking, it looks like Vista is going to make the year end release dates with the article going so far as to declare October 25th as the RTM (release to manufacturing). This will be followed up with the Office 2007 series (including the next version of SharePoint and the next version of Project Server - I am looking forward to the PPM solution there) and then the whole integration of the ProClarity suite next summer. If they keep going this route, by next winter we will have KPI dashboards and scorecards on the desktops of Vista clients running MOSS2k7! COOL! Next stop, Katmia... Someone has combined Google Maps and a video to create in interesting breakneck tour of Paris. Have a look Link to Google Maps + Google Video + Mashup - Claude Lelouch's Rendezvous TechEd 2007 little whispersThere are rumors that TechEd 2007 will be held in Orlando. This would be the same venue as TE2005 and I can say from experience that it was an awesome location for this event. I haven't been able to confirm this off of the MS site, but I trust the source I heard this from. Should be a really good event if you can make it. Start saving your pennies, I doubt I will be able to go (new job and all). October 13 DOH! TechEd change of plansJust last night I mentioned that TE was supposed to be in New Orleans. Today, I read this: http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=36 So the venues are still up in the air. Too bad for Nauwleans. LiveWriter week 2so, I have been using the new blog tool for over a week now and I have now found my big beef with this new product. I will say that it has got my butt in motion and allowed me to blog more in October than I have for most of this year. On the downside, the spell checker seems to have a flaw. The single word I misspell the most is "the". But when I type in teh (my misspelling classic) and run the spollchocker, it offers to turn that into "tech". Ummmmm, NO! Of the other offers, NO "THE"! What's up with that? Tech Blender: Branching and Merging with TFSScott Swigart is becoming one of my favorite bloggers. In the past few days I have found a ton of useful VSTS details on his blog and today was no exception. Scott has found a good article on the TFS Branching and Merging features. Well, it's the MSDN wiki, so it is a little dry. On the plus side, they are at least using analogies :) October 12 Microsoft Tech·Ed 2007
I was going through some of my old comments and noticed that someone asked where TE2k7 will be back in April. I didn't know but I also didn't follow up. My apologies. So, TechEd 2k7 in North America will be in New Orleans. I sincerely hope that New Orleans and the area will return to place it once was, but it seems that it has been slow going based on the news reports I have seen. I do recall that HP was to have a conference in New Orleans when Katrina hit and so I am glad that TE is early in the hurricane season. Hopefully, the massive amount of humanity that TechEd brings in will help to get N.O. back on the tourist type "right track". A Closer Look at the Team Foundation Server Power ToysWell I have been doing a LOT of research into VSTS as we might be looking into Team Foundation Server (TFS) and the associated bits. From a collaboration and management perspective, it looks like there are good things in this solution. If you have 5 or more developers working collaboratively and would like to get good metrics out of what is happening project wise, you really should have a look. I'm not convinced that some of the VSTS dev editions (specifically Software Developer) is worth the extra money, but since I am a non-developer, WHAT DO I KNOW! I am looking forward to the DB Professional edition (code named "DataDude") but that's a few months out still, and for those of you currently in the know already know, I wont be doing the database thing for much longer (I might even tell everyone else who read this one day - you know, both of you). I do think that the Tester edition is worth the money. TFS with the CALs will give most shops the majority of the "bells and whistles" that a developer collaboration solution should provide. For PM's it gives the plug-ins for Project or for Excel that would allow tasks to be uploaded and turned into work items in the VS environment (can follow both a MSF for Agile or MSF for CMMI framework). it also leverages SQL 2005 Reporting services and Analysis services to dish up over 40 reports that will make managers lives a bit easier and could keep stakeholders informed. The Developers also get the Check-in/Check-out capabilities, Branching, Shelving and shareable code libraries. So while I am poking around learning more, I spotted a new video on Channel 9 regarding a free download to extend TFS functionality. I love free! take a look: Link to A Closer Look at the Team Foundation Server Power Toys October 06 FINALLY, RAID Explained properly
For those of you who have stuggled trying to understand the different configuration of RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives) Arrays, Here is a link that should help ;) Link to RAID! Fredrik Normén's blog - NSQUARED2CEEEripes. I have only started digging into VSTS as our group might be moving from VS2k5 to the full VSTS and TFS. while doing some prep work to review all of the selection options, I read a book I picked up at TE 2005 and there was mention there about the next version of Visual Studio and .Net framework called "ORCAS". Not being a programmer myself, I don't follow the VS code names, but to see this post shortly after reading the book kind of freaked me out. Sept. CTP for Orcas is available now. October 04 Windows Live WriteI hate being behind the times. Too many things on the go I guess, but I just stumbled on the Beta for Windows Live Write and as blogging tools for MSN Spaces goes, it beats what I was using before. IT HAS A SPELL CHECKER!!! My blogs will improve..
Check it out: August 29 And Kat makes 4As I have stated I seem to be on a scavenger hunt to finish an odd checklist. I have had the wonderful opprotunity to meet some folks that i have spoken with in newsgroups. With currently over 50 people in the "nosers" section of the newsgroup that I frequent, it's unlikely that I will meet them all but I have met 3 and during a summer vacation out west to see my parents I had the chance to have lunch with another one. While the scenery was beautiful, and spending time with my Mom and Dad was great (except for that golf game with my Dad - and I still blame his crappy clubs..*grumble* shoulda brought mine), it was also really great to meet Kat! Since she's in a newsgroup that I frequent, you KNOW she's a geek too, and it was nice to have that, um, geek moment in the middle of my vacation. Of course, she's also young and well paid and has more vacation than Johnny Carson and is currently in Europe on a 4 week excursion with her BF....huh, I thought I liked her up until that last point! Ok, I hate Kat!!! Only kidding, I'm just jealous
Thanks for lunch Kat, and to all of you MCNGP out there
4 down, 48 to go (if only we would stop adding to our number!) May 07 3 down...I frequent a newsgroup where a select few try to keep a hold on the riff-raff. The problem is that this newsgroup relates to certification and there are many people (term used loosely) who try to either buy or sell materials that are blatant forms of cheating. The group does their best to run this type off. I am proud to be amonst them. The group is more often than not seen as "thugs" and "bullies" but I think they are providing a valuable service. I have had the priveledge of meeting a few over the past year, two of them at TechEd 2005. Ed and Wayne have pictures on this here corner of cyber-space and last month I was tickled to meet up with Ken. He was on a learning junket from Boston and since Toronto is not that far from me (just a couple of hours) I had the chance to have dinner with him. The food was ok, but it was really great to meet another of that group. Since there are 51 in the group currently, I now have 3 down and 47 to go. I should get to meet up with Kat this summer and who knows when I will meet the others. I think I will start a check list. On the flip side, I'm not sure how many more Ferraris I can afford to by (ok, that's an inside joke) March 05 RollercoasterSeems that I've been on a rollercoaster for a few months now. In December my Grnadmother died and my wifes Grandmother just this week. Along with the piles of other thigns in between, I feel a little out of sorts.
My Grandmother was in her 90s so its not like it was sudden. Still, she was the last remaining Grandparent and since she lived so far away, I was unable to attend the funeral, so it was a bummer all the way around. She was really an interesting woman and I can remember my Dad trying to out wit the ole Gal in scrabble and having my Dad fail miserably. She was the daughter of Danish immigrants and this is how I can claim some scandinavian blood. Still, I'm not going to root for the NFL's Vikings
The Mrs's. Grandmother, was going to be 98(!) this month. She had been living in her own home up until a few years ago and I was starting to think that she would be carried feet first out of that house. I might miss her even more than my own Grandmother. When I left Toronto to find work in the Niagara area about 15 years or so ago, she was kind enough to put me up for a month. She always made you feel welcome, but never put her self out of the way for you. She made you feel at home, like you had always been part of the family. She used to give the kids a little money for their birthday, a dollar for each year. One time I joked that I would be turning 50 next year. WHile we all had a giggle over my sudden interest in my advancing age, I was completely dumbfounded when for my next Birthday she gave me a $50 any ways. She was great and I will miss her very much.
Along with this, I wrote 2 MS Beta exams in December. With the stress of the study and writnig the 2 exams, with Beta exams you have to wait for the results. In February I found out that I had passed exam 70-444. YIPPEE!!!!!! finally I get the rollercoaster going up again. I haven't recieved the results for the other exam, but I think I've failed the second one - 70-447. Down we go again. I also applied for to help out at TechEd as a TLG (Technical Learning Guide) which was more waiting for a response. Friday they sent out the e-mails for who's going. I didn't get one. More down. Win some lose a bunch. There might still be a chance I get to go, but now I might have to wait for TechEd 2007. Assuming I don't die from all of the ups and downs that is. November 27 More MexicoWhen we arrived in Mexico, I was enjoying the sunshine. Every single day was bright and hot. Nice change from the land of ice and snow. Ok, that wasn't fair. When we left Toronto it was nice, but extremely dark. We left home at 2:50 am and arrived at the airport around 5. Very dark, very sleepy, didn't care, was on my way to Mexico. The plane was an Airbus 320. I HATE the 320. There is not enough room in the isle to turn around. Seriously sucks. Doesn't matter. I was on my way to Mexico.
Alright, I had high expectations, but I was really looking forward to this. Good news is, when we arrived in Mexico, I was enjoying the sunshine. We touched down at noon and it was clear, sunny and warm - NAY HOT! Shorts and t-shirt in November. I LIKE IT!!!!
We stayed at an all inclusive called the Qualton. Nice place. Right on the beach, only 10 minutes to Old Puerto Vallarta (they call it the Romantic zone and not surprisingly the Qualton is in the Hotel zone). The first day was just laying around the pool. The next day was an adventure - took the bus into the Romantic zone to check out the old city. 9 pesos for both of us for a bus tickets. But since they dirve like they've been drinking tequila all day, they should have been calling them "E tickets". The entire ride on the buses/cabs/etc. where more in the category of "thrill ride" instead of "transportation". The old city was nice, but along the main street you have your choice of jewlery stores (The Mrs. was MOST pleased
Still it was lovely, Ellen bought some stuff, I took some photos, we saw the flea market. By 2 in the afternoon we were swealtering. So we went back to the hotel and had a message at teh spa. They had a show after dinner which was fun. Not quite Broadway quality, but...
Sunday we went on a bus tour. This is something I would strongly encourage you to do if you go. The bus took us into the old city and then we had a guided walking tour around some of the old city. After this we hopped the bus and went further along to a spot to catch a drink. Happened to be in a jewlery store (hmmmmm) but after this we sent along to Mismaloya and Los Arcos. Very pretty spot (see the pics in the new photo section called November 25). After this we had lunch in the jungle, saw a tequila factory and then back to the Hotel. Great day.
Monday morning we went to Bucerias. The bus trip there was, um, more exciting than the city bus. While there were some touristy things there, it was almost 3rd world in some of the things there. We spotted a vedor selling butchered chickens in an open air stall that seemed to be just screaming "saminila" to me. Still, it also had another flea market and was a fairly pretty spot.
Tuesay, beach for the day and then to the Krystal Hotel's Mexican Fiesta. Lotsa fun. Wednesdat was another beach day and we went kyaking in the ocean. Ellen also got her nails done in the spa.
Thursday we went on a booze cruise. We mainly went to try snorkling and see the waterfalls at Quimixto. We were told that if we weren't skilled snorklers we shouldn't go in. LIES! should have gone. On the plus side if I had gone, I would not have gotten pics of the colourfull fish at Los Arcos. We had folks falling down drunk next to a family with little kids on the way back (kind of annoyed me) but the falls at Quimixto and the scenerey was worth it.
all in all it was a GREAT TRIP! November 24 MexicoAs I previously mentioned, I went to Mexico. It was SUCH a great trip. I have never been before, but it was one of the nicest vacations I have aver been on. I will try to give a summary soon (maybe even become a travel agent November 07 HUGE day todayI have been playing with a few toys in the recent past with the monad beta and the Vista beta (thanks very much Microsoft), but the one I have been most interested in for the past year or so has been the SQL 2005 beta (Yukon). This product is HUGE with additions to Reporting, OLAP and ETL that really boost the BI capabilities of this suite. Just the changes to the RDBMS in the form of CRL intigration, XML functionality and the security components have made the learning curve pretty steep. My favourite new component is probably the DDL triggers. I have had someone "Accidently" drop a table (stupid consultant) in production that this would have solved. I have to move along quickly now or I will go back to that last statement and get really bitter.
ANYWAY, during the past couple of weeks SQL 2005 has moved from beta ware to a full product with the product being RTM (released to manufacturing) Oct 27th. I attended a seminar at MS in Mississauga, ON last Tuesday and today is the official release of SQL SERVER 2005!!!!!!! COOL!!!!
So I am a little excited this week. But this isn't just the SQL launch, they are also officially releasing Visual Studio 2005 and BizTalk 2006 so its a big day for DBAs, Developers, integrator and BI specialists. Now all I have to do is learn the rest of the product. Shouldn't take more than a year or two... |
